JMU football will face the UVA at Scott Stadium on Sept. 9, 2023.

From JMU Sports: Nearly 40 years to the day from the last meeting, James Madison football will face the University of Virginia at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville on Sept. 9, 2023.

This will mark just the fourth all-time matchup between the teams, with the Cavaliers holding a 2-1 lead. All previous games have been played at U.Va.

The Dukes notched their biggest win in program history up to that point back on Sept. 18, 1982, with a 21-17 victory against Virginia. That game featured an 80-yard touchdown catch by JMU Hall of Famer Gary Clark, a 53-yard pick-six by Mike Thurman and a fourth-quarter touchdown run by Jon Roddy with 6:24 remaining.

The Cavaliers picked up wins against JMU on Oct. 13, 1979 (69-9) and on Sept. 17, 1983 (21-14)

The Dukes own two victories against Atlantic Coast Conference opponents, as in addition to the 1982 Virginia win, they defeated Virginia Tech 21-16 on Sept. 11, 2010.

This will be one of four non-conference games JMU will play in 2023, with other games being announced at a later time.

JMU is slated to play five games against ACC foes over the next seven years, as it will play Louisville (2022), Virginia (2023), North Carolina twice (2024, 2028) and Virginia Tech (2025).

The Dukes are entering their first season of transition into Football Bowl Subdivision status and as a member of the Sun Belt Conference in 2022.
