Augusta County Sheriff’s Office Awards Medal Of Honor

The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office proudly presents former deputy Kahwan Veney, with the Medal of Valor. The Medal of Valor is awarded for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty.

On Sunday, June 6, 2021, while on his way home from his drill weekend with the Army National Guard, Kahwan came upon a fiery crash that had just occurred on Hermitage Road near Henkel Road in Augusta County. Without hesitation, Veney approached the flaming wreckage and pulled a female passenger that was trapped in a car that was partially underneath a pickup truck. Both vehicles were engulfed in flames.

Through his heroic, selfless action, Deputy Veney saved a citizen’s life that day. Attached is a photo that was taken by the first on-duty deputy who arrived on the scene, moments after the rescue.

Although Deputy Veney has left the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office to pursue a career in the private sector, we are proud to honor his heroic actions on June 6, 2021. He is the first living recipient of this, our highest award.
