SCSO officer involved shooting near Strasburg at a residence Monday

Shenandoah County Sheriff Tim Carter released a video statement Tuesday about an officer involved shooting Monday night.

Monday night at approximately 10 PM the Shenandoah County sheriff's office responded to the area of Copp Road south of Strasburg for report of a male outside a residence shining lights into the home and knocking on doors. The caller also reported hearing several gunshots. A male suspect was located by responding law-enforcement officers at 1115 Copp Rd.. Additional gunshots were heard by officers. After several attempts were made to negotiate a peaceful resolution, the male exited the residence, produced a firearm and was shot by law-enforcement officers. A Shenandoah County sheriff's office deputy discharged his agency issued firearm. Life-saving measures were immediately rendered to the male. He was transported to the Winchester Medical Center where he later died. The deceased has been identified as Sean Christopher McCormick of 1115 Copp Rd. Strasburg Virginia.

Woodstock, Strasburg and New Market Police Departments responded and the Virginia State Police assisted with this incident.

As customary when a Shenandoah County sheriff's office deputy is involved in an officer involved shooting, a request has been made for the incident to be investigated by the Virginia state police and the deputy sheriff has been placed on paid administrative leave.
