Rockingham Board Rejects Truck Stop Proposal at Mauzy

The Rockingham County Board of Supervisors meeting Wednesday night was a standing room only affair as area residents showed up to speak out against a proposed truck stop near the Mauzy interchange on I-81.

An application from "Gas City, LLC" to create a travel center at Exit 257 which would require rezoning a tract of lane fronting Rt 11 near the interchange would need Board approval. Representativies of local realtor Lee and Associates spoke about the proposed rezoning and center. Jeff Robb, representing the realtor, made mention of the lack of parking spaces for trucks in the Staunton district as truck traffic continues to increase.

None of the local residents who packed the meeting spoke in favor of the proposal. Several spoke against it. Drawing major concern was the lack of public water utilities and the fear of run-off in nearby waterways, including Smith's Creek.

The Board voted unanimously to deny the rezoing request for the travel center at the end of discussion.
